Lewes 1s started with aggression and pace in the first half going up 3 – 0 against Old Elthamians after a long range penalty scored by Chris Meddings. (Jim bet me a pint that he’d get it so I owe him one).
There was plenty of full on rugby with huge tackles being made across the park for the next 20 mins but alas after conceding a penalty OEs were able to score a converted try in the left hand corner making it 7 – 3 to the home side. The score stayed like this until the 39th minute of the first half when the home side scored a second try going in to the break 14 – 3 up. Despite the score this was a much improved performance by Lewes against a very strong outfit and gave everyone the belief that if we could score early in the second half the game was up for grabs.
However, it must have been because I forgot to bring Ramelda’s half time wonder drinks with me that it was the home side that quickly got in to their stride after the whistle and scored. This was a major blow and lifted the home side to greater heights leading them to run out worthy winners at 45 – 3 by no-side. So, the first half performance was great with far fewer penalties against than the previous two matches but the second proved unexpectedly costly and didn’t feel like a true reflection of the game.
Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the ride home in the new Superbus and celebrated with man-of-the-match Sam Jones’ after his first full run out in the league. Other worthy candidates were Bellenie and Freshy. I’m looking forward to seeing the side next week at Deal & Bettshanger. There is every hope of a good result.
