Nick Page writes:- Lewes Colts came down to earth with a bump after a recent run of good results against some quality opposition as they exited the Colts Cup in the first round proper last Sunday. Lewes played host to Eastbourne . The two sides had met twice already this season with the honours being shared. With both sides knowing each other quite well this was never going to be a classic match.
Eastbourne started the game as the more lively side. Lewes allowed them to generate some good runs in the centre of the field and seemed unable to create any effective reply.
The score remained nil-nil for most of the first half. Eastbourne did manage to get over the Lewes line only for the ball to be held up by some desperate defending. Eastbourne finally scored before the break, winning a scrum in the Lewes 22 and attacking down the blind side. Although Lewes managed to get their tackles in they were unable to stop the ball coming out of the ruck for the Eastbourne forwards to force their man over the line. A number of Lewes players believed they had done enough to get underneath the ball to also hold this effort up but the Referee awarded the try which Eastbourne converted.
The second half continued in much the same way. Lewes were unable to create any real penetrating moves and although they came close to the Eastbourne line on a number of occasions they could not find the finish and fell victim to a number of knock-ons. Eastbourne effectively managed to spoil most moves Lewes attempted with the number of penalties given away increasing which led to the only points for Lewes on the day from a kick from Jon Pitts.
Eastbourne managed to kick their own penalty to make the score 10 – 3 with around 7 minutes left. This effectively took the game away from a Lewes side who never looked as though they really believed in themselves on the day.
