Nick Page writes: On a lovely sunny day at Horsham and in their last league game of the season, Lewes Colts contrived to lose this game in the first quarter of an hour but did manage to make it a game of two halves.
Horsham came at Lewes from the start and with almost their first attack their backs were able to penetrate the Lewes line too easily to score a converted try.
Lewes tried to get themselves back into the game but Horsham were not having any of it. A penalty to Horsham just inside the Lewes half allowed them to break the Lewes defence again for another converted try under the posts.
Horsham managed to score their third try inside 15 minutes. Having juggled a few players about with the aim of settling the side down a bit Lewes began to put together some good runs of play. Although Horsham did go over again with another converted try Lewes got one back before the break. The more dominant Lewes forwards worked the ball up the pitch to release the backs who managed to find a move that broke through the Horsham defence for Max Taylor to cross the line which went unconverted. The first half finished Horsham 28 to Lewes’s 5.
The second half saw Lewes really get back into the game and put pressure on Horsham. Lewes spent long periods in the Horsham 22 metre area. Their staunch defence could not withhold the sustained Lewes effort. From a penalty the Lewes forwards rucked and mauled closer and closer to the Horsham line for James Dunnill to pick up and cross the line.
Horsham managed to breach the Lewes defence once more up the middle for an unconverted try.
A powerful run by James Halpin just 5 minutes from time saw him cross the Horsham line for Jon Pitts to convert.
The final result was 33 to Horsham and 17 to Lewes. Although able to present somewhat of a fight back, Lewes were left ruing some lackadaisical defence to gift Horsham their early points.
